Homemade Deodorant With Coconut Oil
Brushing your teeth is one of those mundane tasks that you complete on auto pilot every day, twice a day (hopefully). I had to stop using regular deodorant a long time ago b/c it was making the ingrown hairs under my arms a lot worse, and my boyfriend can't use an regular stuff either b/c he's allergic to zinc and it makes him break out or gives him a chemical burn.
Wal-Mart has an excellent selection of deodorant soaps and they even offer natural selections like the Tom's of Maine Deodorant Soap. I only have to apply this deodorant once a day, which is one of the things I love about how well the natural ingredients work. Luckily, if you're adding beeswax, it can emulsify any oil (i.e. turn it into a solid). Men's deodorants that contain crystal-based mineral salts include Crystal brand Roll-On Body Deodorant and Tom's of Maine Crystal Confidence 24 Hour Deodorant. I just bathed my dog with this mixture except i accidently got the clear liquid soap and it was not antibacterial, i added some vitamin E oil that comes in a bottle from the dollar store, she smells great right now and she is so soft, i think we will be using this again!!!....Thanks so much for the dog shampoo recipe!!!
In a small (heat-resistant) mason jar, add your coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax; and set the jar in a shallow pan of simmering water (turned off). Traboulsee says the original recipe was simple: some coconut oil, baking soda and essential oils. You can reduce the baking soda and substitute cornstarch altogether with arrowroot.
We'll round up 3 cents to account for the cost of the baking soda and essential oils and call it $2/tube. Even though we're not supposed to, I used refined coconut oil because it's cheaper and I didn't want the smell of coconut- it's not my favorite smell and I was afraid people might think I was wearing coconut perfume. Soap makers are partial to this clay for the beautiful color it imparts on their soaps.
I just made this for the first time, but used cocoa butter because I didnt have shea butter…it came out awesome! That second day however, I thought the baking soda deodorant" was doomed for sure.
